Jien Yang (County)
Li (A last name)
Notes:
No Fujien Square Sycee have been reported in any publication, and we didn't know of them until a hoard of this type was unearthed in Fujien in 1999. Most of the unearthed squares are uninscribed (Fjs/2,3); only a few pieces were found to be stamped. Through Fjs/1,4 which both carry a place name, we know this type was cast and circulated in Fujien.
A book 問俗錄 "Wun Su Lu" (Quest of Customs) written in the 6th year of Tao Kuang (1826) by Chen Shen Shao, who served as a regional official in many areas in Fujien and Taiwan over a number of decades, indicates that Jien Yang and other Fujien counties adjacent to Jiangsi had lots of hills suitable for growing tea trees. For a long time this area was populated by hundreds of thousands of immigrants from Jiangsi who came across the border to rent the hills or seek jobs. Based on such a background, it is very likely these newcomers also brought in sycee from their home province- Jiangsi Square- and had an influence on Fujien's local sycee. These Fujien Square are quite similar to the Jiangsi pattern.
