Kuang Jiu (Firm) Tax Silver

Notes:

Ytg/4-7 are all in a shape similar to Saddle Sycee, but without an assaying chop; since they were tax silver cast by the silversmiths hired or authorized by the local governments.  Ytg/4,5 were cast for salt tax, and Ytg6,7, were mainly cast for the land and poll tax. Both the silversmiths who have their names shown on the specimens would be directly  responsible to the local governments for the quality of the silver, therefore, no assaying chops were required. Before the 30th year of Kuang Hsu (1904), these were the patterned tax silver acceptable by the Yunnan Provincial Board of Revenue, after that date, Saddle Sycee were also  accepted, on the condition that taxpayers using Saddle Sycee pay an  additional 2% to make up for the insufficient silver  content of Saddle Sycee, which was only 98%.

Most of the Yunnan Triple Groove were cast and circulated before the 10th year of Kuang Hsu (1884) when Saddle Sycee was introduced into the Yunnan markets. In general, they are grouped into two weight ranges, one in 2.5-3 taels; the other in 4-6 taels. One of the reasons for the  introduction of Saddle Sycee was to unify the various weights of Triple Groove into 5 taels per piece.
