Cast in the Southern Sung Dynasty 

 

"Shen" means "penetration". "Shen silver" was one of the quality silver ingots in the Southern Sung Dynasty. Its fineness ranged from 99.5% to 98.5% according to the standard of that time.

 

廣東運司—an abbreviation of 廣南東路轉運司-  Transportation Commission of Kuangtung. This commission was an tax collector and agent of the board of revenue in the central government of the Southern Sung Government and was stationed in each (province).

麥季-"Wheat Season" meaning the 5th month in the celestial calendar specifically in the regions between Yangtze River and Huai River.

 

This piece was cast  in the capital Hangzhou and passed on to a silver shop Liu's firm in Zhenjiang (of Jiangsu Province) which pressed a stamp of its firm as endorsement. It is speculated to be further submitted to a local government in Zhenjiang, therefore, the engraved assaying inscriptions were given before the submission.
